In Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, the CMN company will weigh in Lebanon's port future

In Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, the CMN company will weigh in Lebanon's port future

In search of a new port strategy, the Minister of Public Works and Transport of Lebanon wishes to be inspired by the naval maintenance activity of the French port during a technical visit to the Cherbourg shipyard of the CMN.

The Mechanical constructions of Normandy (CMN) have maintained privileged ties with Lebanon since 1992. Indeed, the Franco-Lebanese brothers, founders of the Privinvest holding, have bought and relaunched the Cherbourg-en-Cotentin shipyard. After the terrible destruction of port infrastructure in the port of Beirut, the Minister therefore naturally turns to the CMN to rebuild port infrastructure at the national level.

A world-renowned expertise

Founded in 1956 by Félix AMIOT, the Cherbourg shipyard has built its reputation with the construction of military buildings such as patrol boats and speedboats for the Marines (French and foreign). This major player in shipbuilding, world famous with foreign navies. Design, construction, integration of combat systems, training and remote support: their expertise spans a wide range and today extends to fishing vessels and Renewable Energies. "Three elements play in favor of CMN: expertise in the naval field, professionalism when we see the monitoring of contracts by the shipyard and its international presence, which correspond to the ambition expressed by the Minister," notes for his part the Ambassador of Lebanon in France, Rami Adwan.

A collaboration with a triple objective

With 220 km of coastline and several ports, Lebanon wishes to assert its position in the east of the Mediterranean. The objectives include several axes: "first, to define a new legal framework for Lebanese ports, in order to have a basis for the participation of the private sector alongside the Lebanese state; secondly, to improve the services we have in our ports; and finally, third objective: to have more services in ports in Lebanon" declares Minister Ali Hamiyé. An attractive development for Lebanese boats but also for ships calling from Europe, the United States and Asia. This added value would allow for international exposure.

More than ever at the forefront of innovations, the Port of Cotentin, which has just presented its remote piloting innovation in Saudi Arabia, will therefore be a first choice partner for Lebanon.

After the visit of the construction workshops, the naves and the armament dock, numerous meetings are planned between CMN and the Lebanese authorities to refine the location of this maintenance site and build the future of port activity in the Land of Cedars. Only one clue : Lebanon does not want to place all its infrastructure in one place.
