Vendée Globe 2020-2021 - a third of the skippers are based or train at Lorient la Base

More than a third of the Vendée Globe's skippers prepare their boats at Lorient la Base. Emulation, sharing, technology, companies, innovations... In about ten years, Lorient has established itself as the hub of offshore racing.

Lorient, logistics base

The city of five ports called the Sailing valley, concentrates much know-how about boating activities. The Offshore Racing pole of Lorient the Base has become the first European technical base of offshore racing: hangars, direct access to the body of water, companies specialized in boating, safety at sea or onboard computing have attracted a dozen international teams and a hundred skippers, half of whom are professional. Accessible in any weather and at any time of the tide, the Bay of Lorient and the site of Lorient la Base offer access to the sea in less than 15 minutes.

A supportive ecosystem

The entire economic sector of offshore racing is represented at Lorient base and on the territory. About fifty local companies have ties to offshore racing: naval architecture, construction sites, sailmakers, high technology, refueling, specialized training: their very advanced know-how is now right at hand. Not to mention the à la carte services offered by the offshore racing pole: physical preparation, weather, theoretical and practical training, physical training and navigation courses.

The Vendée Globe is 30 years old

The Vendée Globe is a solo sailing race around the world without stopping and without assistance. It takes place every 4 years in Les Sables d'Olonne: the city of departure and arrival since 1989. This year, the start of the race will be in private because of the sanitary crisis. 33 solitaires will leave on Sunday 8 November 2020 for their round the world tour, of which 12 skippers come from Lorient, like the favorites Thomas Ruyant (LinkeOut) and Jérémie Beyou (Imoca 60 Charal). The record to be broken is that set by Armel Le Cléac'h in 2016-2017 during the last edition of the race. The reference time is 74 days, 03h35min 46s.
