The city of Caen is organizing two exhibitions to commemorate the 20th anniversary of September 11, 2001

Starting June 11, 2021, two exhibitions organized by the Memorial of Caen will look back on the attacks of September 11, 2001 and reflect the shock wave of this event around the world.

Since the end of the Second World War, Normandy and the city of Caen have a special link with the United States. The D-Day and Battle of Normandy commemorative ceremonies welcome veterans every year and our collective duty of remembrance. The Caen Memorial was also the first in Europe to present an exhibition on the September 11, 2001 attack. It therefore drew on the privileged relations established since 2008 with the New York State Museum and the September 11 Memorial in New York to organize this exhibition.

At the Caen Memorial

Four hijacked planes, 2,977 victims, 6,291 injured ... 20 years later, everyone remembers the catastrophic toll of the attacks and the consequences of the retaliations around the world. "After the attacks on New York and Washington, began the post-September 11th world, which is still ongoing, with a succession of conflicts, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria", describes Stéphane Grimaldi, general director of the Caen Memorial. Rémy Ourdan, journalist and war correspondent for Le Monde newspaper, has been covering the world's conflicts for 30 years. Curator of the exhibition with Stéphane Grimaldi, he deciphers the event accompanied by his fellow journalists and photographers and the expertise of historians.

The World of 9/11 at the Caen Memorial, from 11 June through 31 December, ehxibition only 10€; exhibition + museum 24.80 €.

At the Town Hall of Caen

A steel beam from the World Trade Center, donated by the city of New York to the Caen Memorial, was installed at the foot of the flagpole of the Caen Town Hall. Exposed until then at the Memorial, this remnant of the twin towers will remain on the esplanade for the time of the exhibition which will reconstruct the preparation of the attacks and the day of September 11. The photographer Patrick Chauvel has selected more than 80 photographs and audio and video testimonials will enrich the understanding of this momentous day.
