ENGIE installs an industrial renewable fuels platform in Le Havre

In association with CMA CGM and Air France-KLM, the energy company is developing a reference platform to accelerate the decarbonization of heavy transportation solutions.

As part of the "Grand Canal du Havre" call for projects, HAROPA PORT has allocated 24 hectares of land to ENGIE for the development of a reference platform for new industrial sectors of alternative fuels. An essential step for the acceleration of the low carbon transition of the industrial-port area (ZIP). "Our industrial territory is positioned as a pioneer territory for the transition to carbon neutrality, essential to combat climate change and resource depletion" welcomes Edouard Philippe, Mayor of Le Havre.

The Salamandre factory and maritime transport

ENGIE and its partner CMA CGM, world leader in maritime transport and logistics, confirm the development in Le Havre of the Salamandre plant, the world's first renewable gas production unit based on pyrogasification and methanation technologies for maritime transport. The project aims to produce 11,000 tons per year of renewable and low-carbon gas used in the form of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) by the CMA CGM fleet. The CMA CGM Group's central executive director in charge of industrial assets and operations welcomes this partnership: " By joining forces, ENGIE, Air France-KLM and CMA CGM intend to participate in the emergence of a French renewable gas sector, essential for the decarbonization of maritime and air transport activities". The commissioning of Salamandre should take place in 2027.

France KerEAUzen and air transport

ENGIE will start the feasibility study of France KerEAUzen, a synthetic fuel production unit based on the combination of renewable hydrogen and CO2 supplied by Salamandre and other local industrialists. Pioneer in the experimentation and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and partner of the project, Air France-KLM would be the main customer. It aims to supply the Roissy Charles de Gaulle and Orly airport platforms by pipelines, thus meeting French and European obligations.
" By partnering with the France KerEAUZen project, Air France-KLM is committed to working alongside ENGIE to study the feasibility of these synthetic fuel production units, which will have to take over from aviation biofuels in the coming years" declares in a press release Anne Rigail, General Director of Air France.

These two emblematic projects are fully in line with ENGIE's development strategy and meet both the challenges of reindustrialization of the territory and the objectives of energy sovereignty of France. With a Net Zero carbon Goal by 2050!
