Cherbourg adapts to take advantage of the development of the MRE sector

The Norman port has assets and is aimed at companies specializing in MRE activities (Marine Renewable energies).

Multiple opportunities and jobs at the key!

Cherbourg (translation) has assets to respond to a booming market: nautical access, available spaces, quality of the quaysides, equipment ... one hundred million euros have already been invested by Ports de Normandie. With its efficient facilities, the port of Cherbourg is constantly adapting and positioning itself towards exports in Europe and internationally. Many projects could eventually generate a thousand jobs in the port of Cherbourg.

Efficient installations

The port of Cherbourg is involved in three offshore wind farm projects: Saint-Brieuc (62 wind turbines commissioned at the end of 2023), Fécamp (71 wind turbines for the end of 2023) and Courseulles-sur-Mer (64 wind turbines for 2025). The commercial port is therefore becoming one of the main French hubs for renewable energies. Its numerous spaces and the construction of heavy docks that can support more than 40 tons of loads per square meter (10 sq ft) make it a must in the structuring of the offshore sector in France.

Looking for new occupants

After its call for expressions of interest (AMI) launched by Ports de Normandie, the port of Cherbourg clearly intends to refuel! The implantation of companies wishing to set up or develop MRE activities of an industrial or logistics nature will be welcome starting in 2024! The Mielles quayside already welcomes five companies: LM Wind Power (manufacture of wind turbine blades), Offshore Wind turbines of the High Cliffs (Fécamp wind farm), Sodranord -Van OOrd (dredging), Saipem (translation) (port and/or industrial services) and Asso.subsea (offshore cables).

The issues of decarbonization and energy independence are more than ever in the spotlight. The MRE sector has bright days ahead of it and the investments of the Port of Cherbourg are up to the challenges.
