AYRO chooses Caen to build its boat wings

First factory in the world dedicated to the production of articulated wings, Ayro is located along the canal leading from Caen to the sea, to meet the challenge of wind propulsion innovation for commercial vessels.

A technological breakthrough for maritime transport

The French company Ayro designs, manufactures and markets Oceanwings propulsion sails for commercial vessels and yachts. "The wings are installed vertically on the deck of the boat, and it is the wind that will propel the boat using the same principle as the sails of the sailboat. But the Ayro wing is automated by software that optimizes its adjustment in real time," explains Romain Grandsart, sales and marketing director of Ayro. An innovative technology that allows the hybridization of the motorization of commercial ships in addition to thermal propulsion.

The Canopée project

The production of four Oceanwings 3634 wing masts will mobilize 3200 m2 (34,444 sq. ft.) of the 15,000 m2 (161,458 sq. ft.) in the new plant in Blainville-sur-Orne. The articulated wings will equip the Canopée ship currently under construction in the Netherlands. This 121-meter-long (132 yards) sailing cargo ship will transport components of the Ariane 6 rocket launcher to Guyana. Production will begin in December 2021 with delivery expected at the end of 2022.

Benefits for the port of Caen

The agreement was signed with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) of Caen Normandie, concessionaire of the Caen Ouistreham Port. With its direct access to the sea, this strategic port location will allow the company to benefit from an ecosystem in its area of expertise. "With the establishment of the Ayro plant, the cargo-port of Caen-Ouistreham will be able to participate actively in the development of the economic sector dedicated to maritime transport. Innovation, technology, trade: maritime transport will be at the heart of the project to meet environmental challenges," says Michel Colin, director of the CCI Caen
The region could eventually benefit from the creation of hundreds of jobs.
